Counseling FAQ

Beginning therapy can bring up questions. Here are a few answers about working with me at Desert Streams Counseling, in Round Rock and online throughout Texas.

How do I get started?

You’re welcome to begin with a free consultation. We can talk about what brings you to counseling, what you’re hoping for, and whether my approach feels like a fit. You don’t have to know exactly how to explain everything before reaching out.

What if I’m nervous or don’t know what to say?

We can begin with that, too. You don’t need a polished version of your story. Sometimes the starting point is simply that something feels hard, or that the ways you’ve learned to keep going aren’t working as well anymore. We can take time to find words together.

Who do you work with?

I offer individual and couples counseling for adults. Our work can make room for anxiety, grief, painful experiences, relationship patterns, intimacy, life transitions, and questions of faith. My experience also includes ministry, missionary life, and cross-cultural transitions.

What does attachment-based, trauma-informed therapy mean?

We become curious about how your experiences of connection have shaped what feels safe, difficult, or familiar in relationships today. We also pay attention to the ways painful experiences may still affect you. This includes talking together about the pace of our work and what you need as we explore your story.

How is Christian faith included?

My Christian faith shapes how I understand people, suffering, relationships, and healing. For clients who desire it, sessions can include prayer, Scripture, and Christian theology. We can talk about how you would like faith to be part of counseling.

There is room for questions, doubt, grief, and a complicated relationship with faith. You don’t need to resolve those things before coming. Read more about my approach and faith integration.

Will we talk about my childhood?

Earlier experiences sometimes help us understand what is happening now. We may explore those connections when they are relevant, while also attending to your present relationships and daily life. You can tell me when something feels difficult to talk about; that conversation is part of our work together.

Do you meet in person or online?

Both. In-person appointments are available Thursdays, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., at 3000 Joe Dimaggio Blvd, Suite 89, Round Rock, TX 78665. Secure online appointments are available on other days for clients located in Texas.

What are your fees?

Private-pay individual and couples sessions are $185 for 50 minutes. Please contact me with questions about longer appointments or your current scheduling options.

Do you accept insurance or offer reduced fees?

Desert Streams Counseling is primarily a private-pay practice. Insurance availability is limited; please contact me about current openings for insurance-based services and your particular plan. A limited number of reduced-fee ministry and missionary appointments are available.

How often will we meet, and how long does therapy take?

I generally prefer weekly sessions so there is continuity in our work. We can discuss what is realistic for you. The length of therapy depends on what brings you here, your goals, and the depth and pace of our work. We can revisit those questions as we go.

What if my partner and I see the problem differently?

You don’t have to agree on everything before beginning couples counseling. We can start with each person’s experience and explore the pattern between you, including what each of you hopes might change. Learn more about working together as a couple.

What if something in therapy doesn’t feel helpful?

I hope you’ll tell me. We can talk about what you need, what feels difficult, and whether the pace or approach needs to change. Questions about our work and our relationship are welcome. We can also discuss whether another therapist or type of care would be a better fit.

How should I prepare for an online session?

Choose a private, quiet place where you can speak freely, with a reliable internet connection. You’ll need to be physically located in Texas for our online appointments. If you anticipate travel or have questions about your setup, let’s discuss it before the session.

Where can I learn more about you?

I’m Jessie Kuhn, a Texas Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, license #66640. You can read about my background and approach, explore counseling services, or find consumer information and rights.
